Enabling Do Not Disturb on Apple Devices

Calls and application notifications can be very distracting when participating from your mobile device. This article goes over the steps to enable Do Not Disturb on your Apple devices.

Environment

The steps below apply to:

  • iPhones using iOs 15 and iPads using iPad 15
  • iPhones using iOS 14 and iPads using iPad 14

Not sure which version of iOS or iPadOS you have? Go to Settings > General > About, and look under Software Version.

Process

Do Not Disturb

In iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, you can use Do Not Disturb to silence calls, alerts, and notifications that you get while your device is locked. You can also schedule Do Not Disturb and allow calls from certain people. However, when participating from your Apple device, it is best to silence all calls, alerts, and notifications until the session is over.

When you have Do Not Disturb turned on, a crescent moon icon appears in the status bar and on your Lock Screen. Follow the instructions below to enable Do Not Disturb on your devices using iOS 15 or iPadOS 15.

Instructions

  1. Go to Settings > Focus.
  2. Tap Do Not Disturb.
  3. Select your custom options for notifications. It is best to set it to not allow notifications from anyone or any app.

To turn on Do Not Disturb from Control Center:

  1. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of your screen.
  2. Tap Focus, then tap Do Not Disturb.

Focus

Now with iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, you can use Focus to stay in the moment when you need to concentrate or step away from your device. You can customize Focus settings and choose when you want to receive alerts and notifications while letting other people know when you're busy. Learn more about how to set up your Focus profiles.

With iOS 14, incoming calls from your iPhone, Facetime, and third-party apps will display in a compact design at the top of the screen instead of taking up the full screen. However, this might be distracting when participating from your Apple device. Follow the steps below to enable Do Not Disturb on your devices using iOS 14 or iPadOS 14.

Instructions

  1. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb.
  2. Under Silence, make sure it is set to Always.
  3. Under Phone, make sure it is set to No One.
  4. Under Repeated Calls, make sure it is disabled.

Now, whenever you enable Do Not Disturb on your device, all of your incoming calls will go straight to voicemail and your stream will be uninterrupted.

To enable Do Not Disturb, simply swipe down from the top-right corner of your device and tap the moon icon.
